Now you all must be wondering what this half-saree function is. The half-saree function is a special moment of celebration for a girl’s rite of passage to puberty. She is no doubt still a little girl, but her transition to womanhood is a moment considered as sacred as the wedding. The half-saree function commemorates the day when the girl reaches puberty, or more specifically, when she experiences her first menstrual cycle. It’s celebrated on the seventh day of her first period. All of the girl’s family and close relatives take part in the ceremony and make her feel special. As she enters menarche, she feels an outpouring of affection and support from her family and friends. South Indian wedding traditions celebrate the occasion by wearing staple silk dresses. The girl is now dressed up in a traditional half-saree for the first time in her life, which is why it is popularly referred to as the half-saree function. The girl child is all groomed, dressed up in vibrant outfits, and adorned with bridal jewellery. Customs, rituals, and traditions for the day vary in different cultures. Without further ado, let us dive into the most commonly followed rituals of this sacred ceremony. The ritual begins on the first day of the girl's menstrual cycle, which is biologically known as menarche, and it consists of a calming oil massage and a bath in water with neem leaves. Before entering her special room, she dips her palms in a rice flour batter and imprints them on the wall. Over the next few days, the staff treats her to a rich, nutritional diet and administers some ayurvedic supplements. They greet the girl with a drink consisting of eggs and sesame oil. Not only does she start drinking this, but her diet also includes red spinach, jaggery rice, dried ginger water, and a plethora of other nutritious options. An elderly woman from the community walks by her side and educates her on the biological and physical changes she might expect. On the 7th day, early in the morning, she will receive another special bath after applying turmeric paste to her. They use hibiscus shampoo to wash her hair, as it provides certain herbal benefits. They call this special bath Thirandukuli. After she completes the bath, her elders and relatives elegantly dress her and warmly welcome her. She is greeted with a Thaalapoli and Astamangala platter (the tray consists of eight items for her personal care and well-being). Silk sarees, jewellery, make-up, and various other gifts are happily presented to the girl for her to happily and proudly embrace womanhood. This is when the actual celebrations are bound to begin. Below, we mention the rituals in the order they commence.
